Broadmoor Hospital

Berkshire Record Office has recently received the historic archives of Broadmoor Hospital, England's first criminal lunatic asylum. These archives were made available for research on 18 November 2008, after being listed and repaired thanks to a grant from The Wellcome Trust. Repair work will continue until 2011, but many records from the Victorian asylum can now be accessed, including case files for around 1500 patients who died more than one hundred years ago. The Berkshire Echo autumn 2008 edition gives more information about our Broadmoor project, and Broadmoor's history.

We have agreed a detailed access protocol with the Hospital which will guide what information we can make available, and this can be downloaded from the link below:
