Photograph of a Royal Drive

Photograph of a Royal Drive

Date: 1935 | Reference: WI/AZ5/1

This photograph comes from an album from the Borough of Windsor and features Queen Mary accompanied by the Duke of Gloucester, third son of King George V. They are travelling over Windsor Bridge, followed by the Blues and Royals, a division of the Household Cavalry. The photograph was taken during George V’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

The current Windsor bridge dates from 1824 and will celebrate its bicentenary next year. The bridge, once tolled, was pedestrianised in 1970.

‘I came across this image by chance whilst I was taking photographs for an exhibition we were doing. My Grandfather used to lead The Band of the Household Cavalry, Lifeguards division and later The Queens Bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard, so much of my childhood was spent watching military processions through my hometown of Windsor. However, I had never seen one go across Windsor Bridge because the traffic was stopped before I was born, so this photograph really stood out to me.’
